A gum graft, also known as a soft tissue graft, is a procedure used to restore lost gum tissue and protect teeth from further damage caused by gum recession. If the gumline recedes too much, it can expose the tooth roots, leading to sensitivity, an increased risk of decay and potential tooth loss. Gum grafting helps restore the protective barrier around your teeth and enhances the appearance of your smile.
The Gum Grafting Procedure
During a gum grafting procedure, Dr. Michael Homayun stitches donor tissue to the areas of the gums where additional coverage is needed. Depending on your specific needs, the donor tissue may be taken from the roof of your mouth, surrounding gum tissue or a tissue bank. The type of graft used will be determined based on the extent of gum recession, the condition of your gum tissue and your overall oral health.
There are three primary types of gum grafts:
- Connective tissue grafts: Tissue is taken from beneath a small flap in the roof of the mouth and placed over the affected area.
- Free gingival grafts: A thin layer of tissue is removed directly from the roof of the mouth and transplanted to the gums.
- Pedicle grafts: Tissue is partially cut from adjacent gum areas and repositioned to cover the receded area.
In some cases, our periodontist may use advanced regenerative techniques, such as tissue-stimulating proteins, to encourage natural healing and growth.
When Is Gum Grafting Necessary?
Gum grafting is recommended for individuals who have significant gum recession, which may occur due to periodontal disease, aggressive brushing or genetic factors. When left untreated, gum recession can lead to increased tooth sensitivity, root exposure and a higher risk of infection or decay.
This procedure not only restores gum tissue but also improves the overall aesthetics of your smile. A more even and healthy gumline can make teeth look more proportionate and youthful.
